What Does It Mean by “Building Up” a Christian?

Why Is “Building Up” as a Believer of the One True God Important?

What Is a Heart of Love from a Biblical Perspective?

Among all of Jesus teachings, love is the greatest. That is why when Jesus was asked by a teacher of the Law in Matthew 22:36 as to which commandment was the greatest of all, He responded: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself’” (Matthew 22:37-38). In Mark 12:33, the teacher then goes on to say that to love God and others is far more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices. And Romans 8:13 tells us that “ . . . for whoever loves others [God and people] has fulfilled the law.”

How Does Having a Heart of Love Enable a Believer to be Successful?

A heart of love is one that loves God and loves people. And to love God means to do what He says. In John 14:15 Jesus echoed this sentiment when He said to His disciples (believers): “‘If you love me, keep my commands [my truths].’”

When you are born again in Christ—that is you accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, you become a new creation in Christ in “spirit.” However, this does not mean that your mind becomes like that of Christ’s instantaneously. This is why the Apostle Paul said, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:2). In other words, from the moment you accept Christ as Lord in your life, you begin the process of transforming yourself and your whole life so that you become more and more “like Christ.” But what does be like Christ really mean? It means to be willing and obedient to the Word of God through faith, which “building up” will enable a believer to do. To become more like Jesus, there must be a renewal of the mind. By this, there must be a doing away with your old thinking and beliefs and filling your mind with the truths of God and seeing things from His perspective. Three ways you can begin to transform your mind are: 1. Immerse yourself in the Bible daily and meditate on the Word of God The purpose of reading and studying the Bible is to fill your mind with God’s truths and His will. In doing so, it will shift your perspective (which is seeing things your way) to His perspective (which is seeing things God’s way). As this happens, you will put His will above yours. 2. Have an active prayer life After Jesus came and gave His life for all of mankind’s sin, we no longer need a mediator (e.g., priest) between us and God because Christ is our mediator and intercessor. Therefore, as a believer, you can directly communicate with God through your spirit by praying. When you pray you are personally inviting Him into your spiritual life. Through prayer, God hears you and will answer you. This is what Jeremiah 29:12 says, “ . . . come and pray to Me [the Lord God], and I will listen to you.” In addition, John 15:7 tells us: “If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask [pray] whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.” Having an active prayer life will help you to develop a deeper connection with the Lord. 3. Fellowship with other Christians It is very important that a new or struggling believer seek fellowship with other believers through small church group and/or Bible study. It would be most beneficial to fellowship with those who are strong in their walk with the Lord (i.e., those who know God’s truths and practice them in their own lives). Why is this important? “If the blind [those who don’t know and practice God’s truths] lead the blind, both will fall into a pit” (Matthew 15:14). The point of fellowshipping is so that those who are strong in the faith can help lift up those who are new or struggling in their walk with God. At the same time, by fellowshipping, believers learn from one another and encourage each other to constantly seek the Lord. As you do the things above, you will begin to grow in your faith in God and build up your mind and yourself to where He wants you to be—that is being willing and obedient to the Word of God. In Luke 2:52 it says, “ . . . Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.” As a human being, Jesus was building up by growing and developing Himself with respect to God and the world in which He lived in. So, why would we not be doing the same as Christians?

One reason why many Christians are struggling or defeated in life is because they believe and act on the lies of Satan (whether they realized it or not). John 8:44 clearly tells us that Satan is a liar and the father of lies. Most people tend to think of lies as spoken words. However, the Enemy’s lies come in many different forms, such as spoken words, images, writings, songs, drugs, persons (men and women), places, things, etc. Depending on how these things are presented, used, or promoted make them lies. After all, Genesis 3:1 does tell us that Satan is quite clever in the area of deception. He will use whatever he can to deceive us. As long as followers of God are not building themselves up, they can easily be deceived by the Enemy.

What Is a Heart of Servanthood?

A heart of servanthood refers to a desire to serve others willingly and obediently. Regardless of whether one is called to serve God or people, the service is always unto God. Thus, when we are serving others, we are to put forth our very best at all times. When it comes to serving, there are four categories:

Why Is Having a Heart of Servanthood Important?

As Christians, we are all called into the ministry of Jesus Christ. Before ascending back to Heaven, Jesus gave the Great Commission to His disciples when He said, “‘ . . . go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you’” (Matthew 28:19-20). This commandment also applies to us today as well. We are to go and preach the Good News of the Lord to all people, bring them to know Him, and teach them to do what God says.
